P versus NP and geometry
In this primarily expository article, I describe geometric approaches to variants of P v. NP , present several results that illustrate the role of group actions in complexity theory, and make a first step towards geometric definitions of complexity classes. My goal is to help bring geometry and complexity theory closer together.
متن کاملGeometry of valley growth
Although amphitheatre-shaped valley heads can be cut by groundwater flows emerging from springs, recent geological evidence suggests that other processes may also produce similar features, thus confounding the interpretations of such valley heads on Earth and Mars. To better understand the origin of this topographic form, we combine field observations, laboratory experiments, analysis of a high...
متن کاملExtinction versus unbounded growth
Certain Markov processes, or deterministic evolution equations, have the property that they are dual to a stochastic process that exhibits extinction versus unbounded growth, i.e., the total mass in such a process either becomes zero, or grows without bounds as time tends to infinity. If this is the case, then this phenomenon can often be used to determine the invariant measures, or fixed point...
متن کاملGeometry-based simulation of submonolayer film growth
A geometry-based simulation (GBS) strategy is developed for modeling film growth, which avoids explicit treatment of the terrace diffusion of adatoms and their aggregation with islands a computationally expensive component of either atomistic simulation or continuum analysis. GBS characterizes island growth in terms of capture zones (CZ's), and implements simple but realistic geometric rules to...
متن کاملFractal geometry , information growth and nonextensive thermodynamics
This is a study of the information evolution of complex systems by a geometrical consideration. We look at chaotic systems evolving in fractal phase space. The entropy change in time due to the fractal geometry is assimilated to the information growth through the scale refinement. Due to the incompleteness of the state number counting at any scale on fractal support, the incomplete normalizatio...
